together, LET’S BUILD A STRONGER Mecklenburg
Community focus
opportunity
Building a stronger education system in Mecklenburg County lays the foundation for a brighter future by equipping residents with the skills they need to succeed. When combined with greater access to quality jobs and healthcare, this creates a cycle of opportunity that benefits everyone. Improving education ensures our workforce is prepared, while accessible healthcare keeps our community healthy and ready to contribute. Together, these investments unlock potential, foster economic growth, and create a more inclusive environment where every resident has the chance to thrive.
Environmental
Mecklenburg County's growing population requires the county government to take a leading role in environmental stewardship. The Board of County Commissioners (BOCC) must continue to protect vital resources, like the Catawba River Basin, to ensure the long-term health and well-being of the community. Failing to take care of our environment and natural resources will result in significant economic and affordability disadvantages, shifting the costs of environmental degradation onto businesses, taxpayers, and future generations.
Affordability
Keeping our community affordable is a core tenant of building a strong and diverse Mecklenburg County. Affordability ensures that both new and longtime residents can continue to call North Mecklenburg home, fostering a rich blend of experiences, backgrounds, and perspectives. By prioritizing accessible housing and cost-conscious living, we create a welcoming environment where everyone has the opportunity to thrive, contributing to the lasting vibrancy and resilience of our community.
recreational
A robust park, greenway, and recreational network is essential to building a vibrant, healthy community. These spaces provide residents with opportunities for physical activity, relaxation, and social connection, improving overall well-being and quality of life. Greenways link neighborhoods, creating safe, scenic routes for walking and biking that reduce traffic and pollution. Parks offer natural environments that support mental health, foster community gatherings, and protect local wildlife. Investing in these networks strengthens community resilience, encourages active lifestyles, and enhances property values, making our community a more attractive and sustainable place to live for everyone.
Safety
Keeping our schools, transit, roads, and community safe is a top priority because safety lays the foundation for a thriving, welcoming community. When everyone feels secure, children can learn without distraction, commuters can travel with peace of mind, and neighborhoods foster connection and trust. A safe community not only protects residents but also creates the conditions for prosperity, growth, and opportunity for all. Together, safety and inclusivity build a brighter future where every individual can thrive.
Accessibility
A comprehensive human services network, spanning from universal pre-kindergarten programs to elder-care, is essential for building strong, healthy communities. Early childhood education lays the foundation for lifelong learning and success, while accessible elder-care ensures dignity and support for seniors. Together, these services create a safety net that promotes well-being across all stages of life, reduces inequality, and fosters economic stability. Investing in such a continuum not only improves quality of life for individuals but also strengthens society as a whole.

FAQs About the County
-
The Mecklenburg County Board of Commissioners (BOCC) serves as the primary governing, legislative, and policy-making body for the county. While often confused with the Charlotte City Council, the County Commission focuses on regional services that impact all residents of Mecklenburg County, regardless of whether they live inside or outside city limits.
-
There is a wide range of services and departments under Mecklenburg County’s umbrella. The best way to find out more is to visit www.mecknc.gov or call CharMeck 311 to speak with a customer contact at the county offices.
-
The most significant power the Commission holds is “the power of funds.” The County approves a multi-billion dollar budget that funds schools, parks, libraries, and a host of human services. They also set the county-wide property tax rate, which is the primary source of revenue for county operations.
-
The Board of County Commissioners hold multiple public meetings every month at the Charlotte Government Center but also stream those meetings live online at www.bocc.mecknc.gov. There you will also find a calendar of events where commissioners are holding Community Meetings in their districts and across the county.
